Levantine Salsa, Arabic Tomato & Herb Garnish Salad (Salata Baladiya)

Levantine Salsa, Arabic Tomato & Herb Garnish Salad (Salata Baladiya)

Ingredients

  • 1 large ripe tomato, sliced very thin
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon za’atar
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon Aleppo pepper
  • 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Arrange the thinly sliced tomato on a serving plate.
  2. Scatter the parsley evenly over the tomatoes.
  3. Sprinkle with za’atar, salt, black pepper, and Aleppo pepper, if using.
  4. Drizzle with the pomegranate molasses and lemon juice.
  5. Let sit for 5–10 minutes before serving so the tomatoes can absorb the flavors.
  6. Serve immediately with warm pita or as part of a mezze spread.

Nunu’s Tip: Keep the tomato slices thin and dress the salad just before serving. The combination of tangy lemon + sweet-tart pomegranate molasses + earthy za’atar is what makes this simple salad so good.
