Syrian Spiced Ground Beef

Syrian Spiced Ground Beef

INGREDIENTS

1 lb ground beef

2 tbsp olive oil

1 small shallot finely chopped

1.5 tsp Syrian 7 spice

1 tsp salt

1 tbsp tomato paste

1.5 tsp ground cumin

14 oz tomato sauce or 14 oz can of crushed or chopped tomatoes

1/4 cup of frozen peas

PREPARATION

In a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot set add 2 tablespoons of the EVOO and set to high heat. Add shallot and cook for 2 - 4 minutes.

Fold in the meat and stir occasionally until it is well browned, about 5 minutes.

Sprinkle in the Syrian 7 spices and salt, mix and allow to sauté for another minute.

Add frozen peas, tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer until the meat is fully cooked.

Serve with my riz recipe (Lebanese rice), pita, pasta or browned fingerling potatoes.

What is Syrian 7 spice? It’s a mix of black pepper, cumin, paprika, coriander, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamom.
